The Monnaie de Paris has launched (21st March) a new numismatic series chronicling the travels of France’s favoritePetit Prince, based on the novella by Antoine de Saint Exupéry (1900 – 1944). The release of this most recent series of “The Little Prince” coins coincides with the 70th anniversary of the story’s publication in France in 1946.

Antoine de Saint Exupéry was a French poet and aviator who made his first flight in 1912, marking the beginning of his passion for aviation. He studied architecture until his French Air Force service began in 1921 in Strasbourg. A 1923 plane accident in Le Bourget demobilized him, and it was at this time that his writing career began.

In 1931, he published his second book, Vol de nuit. From 1932 on he focused on writing and journalism, occasionally reporting on major events, while also remaining a test pilot and raid pilot. In 1939, he served as a captain in the French Air Force and was recruited for service in an air reconnaissance squadron. During the Armistice, he left France bound for New York with the aim of enlisting or convincing the Americans to enter World War II. He wrote Le Petit Prince in New York City during this period.

In April 1943, Saint Exupéry returned to duty in aviation and was stationed in Tunisia. In the spring of 1944, he joined a unit in charge of photographic reconnaissance in preparation for the Allied landings in the south of France. Sadly, Saint Exupéry did not see the liberation of his country, having died after crashing his plane at sea on July 31, 1944. The plane was not found until 2000.

Le Petit Prince was originally published on April 6, 1943 in the United States and has sold more than 150 million copies around the world. It has been translated into over 270 languages, and has been described as a book for children written for grown-ups, as it can be read on many different levels to provide pleasure and food for thought for readers of all ages.

The fanciful story begins when the narrator, who is an aviator, crashes with his aeroplane in the middle of the Sahara desert. While he is trying to repair his aeroplane, a little boy — the Little Prince — appears and asks him to draw a sheep. The author learns that the Little Prince comes from asteroid B-612, where he has left behind three volcanoes and a rose.

The little Prince has had extensive travels before reaching earth, having visited other planets and met some very odd people, such as a king, a conceited man, a drunkard, a lamplighter, and a geographer. Since arriving on earth, he has communicated with a fox who has taught him “that to know someone or something, you must tame them, and that makes them unique” further teaching that “what is essential is invisible to the eye,” according to the fox.

The Little Prince and its author were highlighted on France’s last legacy franc-denominated bank note series. The 50-franc note originally issued in 1997 featured a portrait of Saint-Exupéry on the obverse, along with a rendition of the Little Prince. The story has been made into a feature length anime-film that was released last year and has served as the inspiration for a “Petit Prince” theme park of 23 hectares located in Alsace.

BWW Reviews: COCA Theatre Company's Extraordinary THE LITTLE PRINCE

If you’re looking for thoughtful entertainment that’s suitable for children and adults then you should definitely check out the COCA Theatre Company’s current production of The Little Prince based on the classic book by Antoine de Saint Exupery (music by Rick Cummins with book and lyrics byJohn Scoullar). Even if you’ve never read the story, you’ll still be captivated by the whimsical, yet decidedly philosophical, journey of a little boy who travels the stars seeking answers while delivering certain truths. An excellent cast combines professional and non-professional actors who carry this material well. Best of all, there are stunning visual elements and musical numbers that act to enhance the overall experience.

The Little Prince is traveling the universe seeking knowledge and discovering much about the differences between his own planet and the others that he visits. Consistently he finds that those who inhabit other worlds are just too caught up in the business of running them to appreciate their beauty. A chance encounter on Earth with a man known as the Aviator brings them both a bit of enlightenment that will forever change their perspectives.

Michael Harp, so good at The Muny this past season, absolutely sparkles as the Little Prince, delivering his songs with such energy and life that he provides an invigorating presence whenever he’s on stage. Michael Beatty is also sharp as the Aviator, a frustrated artist turned pilot, who’s had to make an emergency landing in the desert. Beatty also displays a fine voice that meshes well with the material. April Strelinger does nice work as the Fox, and her playful attitude acts as a perfect counter balance to the more serious aspects of the show. Patrick Blindauer (King, Business Man, Lamplighter) amuses with his variety of fussy portrayals, and Will Bofiglio does the same with his trio of roles (Conceited Man, Drunkard, Geographer). Kimmie Kid makes a lovely and graceful impression as the Rose, and RhonniRose Mantilla, Halley Stein, Olivia Dudenhoffer, and Grace Knight neatly round out the cast as dancers and members of the ensemble.

Shanara Gabrielle‘s direction is very well conceived and executed. Gabrielle is aided by the extraordinary efforts of Peter and Margery Spack who are responsible for an amazing set and stunning visual projections. Pianist/Conductor Charlie Mueller’s musical direction is spot on, with this pleasant score nicely realized by Mueller, Anna Bird (cello), Colin Healy (guitar/violin), Benjamin Majchrzak (percussion, drums), and Rick Steiling (bass). Lou Bird’s costumes delineate each character, and Maureen Berry’s lighting is evocative and atmospheric.

Do yourself a favor and take the family to see COCA Theatre Company’s production of The Little Prince, it’s genuine delight. It continues through March 14, 2015 at COCA.

A new Little Prince play in Middleboro

From the Burt Wood Team that has produced sold out productions of « The Diary of Anne Frank, » « The Miracle Worker » and « The Crucible » comes yet another artistic creation.

Director Matthew Bruffee is busy rehearsing with his cast for « The Little Prince. » « This is one of my all-time favorites! » he said.  » I am thinking outside the box to create a colorful, mystical, and fantastical universe for this play. The audience hopefully will be transported to other worldly planets and experience the philosophical viewpoints of this play through our visual presentation.

« As a child with a vivid imagination, I believed that I could fly so I relate well to The Little Prince’s ability to do so, » Mr. Bruffee said. « As an adult, I like to hold on to my childhood wonder and I do so through directing at Burt Wood. I am a firm believer that imagination nurtures the soul and creativity gives it breath through theatre and the arts. I am excited to create this world for my cast and I hope parents, grandparents, and bring their kids to enjoy this classic tale. »

« The Little Prince » has been made into a movie, a TV show, an animated cartoon, a theme park, an opera, and a ballet. The beauty and simplicity of this story is in its lessons, either learned or taught by the Little Prince as he tells of his planet and travels through the universe. It is also a story about love, friendship, and the meaning of life.
