The Little Prince show in Chicago

Lookingglass Theatre Company’s The Little Prince, written by Rick Cummings and John Scoullar, based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is directed by Ensemble Member David Catlin and produced in association with The Actors Gymnasium. The production has been extended through February 23, 2013.

TLP

The cast includes Ensemble Member Raymond Fox (King), Artistic Associates Lauren Hirte (Desert Rose) and Louise Lamson (Rose) with Ian Barford (Aviator), Amelia Hefferon (Little Prince), Kareem Bandealy (Snake), Adeoye (Lamp Lighter) and Kasey Foster (Fox).

Stuck, thirsty and alone. A pilot stranded in the Sahara Desert meets an enigmatic, charismatic young prince fallen from the sky who regales him with tales of life among the stars: tales with earthly importance. In this visually arresting, fully immersive theatrical interpretation of the beloved French novella, director David Catlin (creator of Lookingglass Alice) illustrates the story with fantastic characters and gravity-defying, awe-inspiring physical feats.

The Little Prince speaks – in breathtaking splendor – to the castaway in all of us: challenging our perspective, opening our eyes and bringing us back to the heart of what truly matters.

In partnership with IWC, the Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation raises funds to fight against illiteracy

A unique piece of luxury Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen has been auctioned as part of a sale of valuable watches organized by Sotheby’s Geneva. This unique piece, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition « Le Petit Prince » in platinum, got a new owner for the sum of CHF 173,000. This amount allows IWC and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation to build a school and a library in Cambodia, contributing to fight against illiteracy.

With this sale, we pay tribute to the commitment of the Foundation in the fight against illiteracy. For a company like ours, that found success in the world, it seems natural to assume social responsibility. This is why we supports the Saint- Exupéry Estate and their charitable foundation since 2006,with the humanitarian values defended by the famous pilot and writer , commented Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen , about this auction.

Nephew of Antoine de Saint- Exupéry and Director Saint-Exupéry – d’Agay Estate, Olivier d’ Agay welcomes the outcome of the auction : The highest bidder has not only gained valuable single piece , it can be also certain that his contribution will be bound in a manner entirely appropriate . The proceeds of the sale will enable us to help provide educational training and thus a better future for Cambodian children. Reading is the key to development and personal growth .

Sipar and the fight against illiteracy in Cambodia

The Foundation works closely with SIPAR, a non-governmental organization that daily struggle against illiteracy in Cambodia. At stake: access to books. Libraries and training centers had already helped more than two hundred thousand children access to books as well as literary activities. Bus-library provide reading materials in remote areas, and Sipar monthly publishes  articles in Khmer language , including  » The Little Prince  » by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. A new school building with five classrooms and a library is currently under construction at Roluos, a village in the province of Siem Reap. The school opening is scheduled for spring 2014.

We would not have been able to fulfill our mission without the help of committed partners like IWC Schaffhausen , says Olivier d’ Agay. IWC is closely linked to the world of aeronautics and shares the values of Saint-Exupéry. We work together to ensure that young people can build their own future and we encourage them to take responsibility and play an active role in society.

IWC is associated with the image and values of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry for many years .

Antoine de Saint- Exupéry is still a model of courage, a pioneering spirit , perseverance and passion, says CEO of IWC Georges Kern . His willingness to make things happen is exemplary. As a company assuming social responsibility , IWC is proud to be partner of the Antoine de Saint- Exupéry Youth Foundation since 2006 .

Since the beginning of the collaboration with the Antoine de Saint- Exupery Estate, IWC commemorates the unforgettable French writer and pilot by creating special editions of Pilot’s Watches .

During the early years of this partnership, the limited Pilot Watches special editions were dedicated to his literary works. In 2006, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph paid tribute to the novel  » Night Flight . » In 2007, the Pilot’s Watch Automatic honored « Mail South » and in 2008, the Pilot’s Watch UTC , evoked the poetic work  » Wind, Sand and Stars . » In 2009 and 2010 , IWC launched the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition, as a tribute to all of Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s work. In 2011, we chose for the special edition the so appreciated Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar, a rare piece , and for 2012 , year of the IWC Pilot’s Watches , the Pilot’s Watch Antoine de Saint Exupéry ChronographeEdition , which recalls the passion animating the pilot , writer and humanist. The Little Prince Theme Park !

vued'ensembleparc

This summer, the Little Prince theme park will open !

All begins with a wonderful encounter…

– Aérophile, a french SME manufacturer of tethered balloons, the only approved aircraft for leisure and amusement parks. Jérôme Giacomoni and Matthieu Gobbi, both passionate about balloons who always wanted to share their passion with others. After twenty years, they are both, manufacturers with more than 60 balloons sold in more than 30 countries and operators of 8 sites in France and in the US, fl ying 500 000 passengers per year.

– The Little blond boy coming from the asteroid B612, a little angry with his rose, whose story has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide! The Little Prince is the most (nonreligious) translated book in the world, in 275 languages. The author, Antoine de St Exupéry, who died for France – 70 years ago next July 2014 – is both a legendary pilot, hero of the Aeropostale (patented in Alsace in 1921 !) and a world-famous writer.

– And a beautiful site, in Ungersheim, about twenty kilometers from Mulhouse and Colmar, at the foot of the Vosges balloons. The location of the future park is where fell, in November 7th 1492, the fi rst preserved and studied meteorite in the world called the meteorite of Ensisheim. 500 years later, the Little Prince Park will be installed on this same site, the amazing design of which reminds us of the impact of this meteorite and the planet B612 and its satellites.

The first aerial Park in the world !

Visitors will be invited to travel to the other planets of the Little Prince, aboard three “planet balloons”:

Using the principle of the lighter than air, passengers will travel up to 150 meters above the ground and will discover a unique view of the most beautiful scenery of Europe: to the West the Vosges, to the East the Black Forest and in the north-south axis, the plain of Alsace. In close proximity, the emblematic figure of the region, the Ecomusée and the former potash mine of Carreau Rodolphe, and nearby, Germany and Switzerland!

The third planet is more a gigantic aerial platform. Feet in the sky dangling up to 35 meters off the ground,  enjoying the beauty of an
exceptional 360° view, a glass in the hand : the planet of the Drinker is combining emotions and conviviality.

The Wings of Courage, the great story of the Aeropostale retracing the tale of Guillaumet in the Andes; Night Flight, a journey full of sensations simulating the epic conditions of the pilot without visibility, and Southern Mail, where the young aeronauts carry the mail to the right continent.

The Dew of the Desert to refresh young and old, the Labyrinth of the Fountain that will showcase the 53 minutes of the Little Prince or Travel under the Sea, a journey by sea scooter to discover the fauna of the depth of the Mediterranean.

The Butterfl y Farm, first breeding farm of indigenous Lepidoptera open to the public, Draw me a Sheep and the Rose Garden. Two unique and original shows Dancing with the Sheep and Encounter with the Foxes, in which actors are big fl uffy balls with long ears or covered with wool.

The Little Prince, a New York Story

The Little Prince is the subject of a major exhibition at the Morgan Library and Museum of New-York !

Show includes the original working manuscript and watercolors as well as letters and photographs, exploring the creation of this literary landmark, 70 years ago, in New-York.

The Little Prince: A New York Story
January 24–April 27, 2014

New York, NY, December 3, 2013—Since its publication seventy years ago, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince has captivated millions of readers throughout the world. Remarkably, this French tale of an interstellar traveler who comes to Earth in search of friendship and understanding was written and first published in New York City, during the two years the author spent there at the height of the Second World War. The Little Prince: A New York Story, a major exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum, will feature Saint-Exupéry’s original watercolors and heavily-revised working manuscript. Focusing on the story’s American origins, it is the first exhibition to explore in depth the creative decisions Saint-Exupéry made as he crafted what would become one of the best-selling books of all time—now translated into more than two hundred fifty languages. The Little Prince: A New York Story will be on view from January 24 through April 27, 2014.

morgan5 Morgtan3

The heart of the exhibition is the display of the author’s working manuscript and drawings, which were acquired by the Morgan in 1968. Also on view will be rare printed editions from the Morgan’s collection as well as personal letters, photographs, and artifacts on loan from the Saint-Exupéry estate, private collections, and museums and libraries in France and the United States.
“The Little Prince has had a profound impact on generations of children and adults alike,” said William M. Griswold, Director of the Morgan. “This exhibition allows us to step back to the moment of creation and witness Saint-Exupéry at work right here in New York. One discovers the author-aviator struggling with the enormity of events impacting his native France and the world at large, while finding the focus to complete a tale as magical today as it was seventy years ago.”

The Little Prince on the Phoenix Theatre stage

The Little Prince may have returned to his own tiny planet to tend his Rose and look after his Sheep, but for a short enchanted time he returns to us and comes alive on stage. This play/musical tells the story of a world-weary and disenchanted Aviator whose sputtering plane strands him in the Sahara Desert and a mysterious, regal « little man » who appears and asks him to « Please, sir, draw me a sheep. » During their two weeks together in the desert, the Little Prince tells the Aviator about his adventures through the galaxy, how he met the Lamplighter and the Businesswoman and the Geographer, and about his strained relationship with a very special flower on his own tiny planet. The Little Prince talks to everyone he meets: a garden of roses, the Snake and a Fox who wishes to be tamed. From each he gains a unique insight which he shares with the Aviator: « It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. » « What is essential is invisible to the eye. » Both the « little man » and the Aviator reach a new understanding of how to laugh, cry, and love again. Based on the original text by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the beauty and truth of this story and the language with which it is told gives the audience a gift on insight into their own lives and the meaning of the holiday season.
